Weekly Sharebuilder Purchases

Here are my automatic investments for this week.

  • RDS-b:  4.16 shares @ $72.12 --- Yield  5.21%
  • BBL:  6.27 shares @ $47.83 --- Yield  5.19%

Total capital invested is $600 ($300 in each company) and the combined yield is 5.20%. These purchases will increase my yearly dividends by $31.20.

As tempting as it was to go stronger into the energy markets, I decided to just nibble a bit this week. I have lost a couple of fingers already trying to catch falling knifes (more like flying battle axes in some cases). Hopefully the bottom for oil is somewhere in the 60s. If oil continues its descent down into the 50s or worse down to the 40s, things could get a bit dicey to say the least.

Stocks on my radar for next week are T, MCD, IBM, GE, BBL, RDS-b, XOM, GM, and PM.

  1. MDP,
How do you lower your commission cost again? I use SB as well and I want to utilize your strategy on lowering my cost. Do they still offer automatic investing with low cost or it expired already? I tried searching their promotions but I cant find it anymore, I remember it was there when I first signed up I should've grabbed it :( Great purchases you got there, my eyes are still on energy.
    Take care,

    1. FFF,

Sharebuilder discontinued the $12 for 12 automatic investments a few months back. I believe Dividend Growth Journey has enrolled in Sharebuilder through Costco. I think he pays $10 per month for 12 automatic investments. That my be a good option for you.

    2. Yes I second that. I use Sharebuilder thru Costco and do pay $10/month for 12 automatic transactions (every tuesdays). Regular transaction with that account are $4.95. Overall I find it to be a pretty good deal.

    3. I also use Sharebuilder through Costco for the same deals.

When I first heard about the discontinuation, I asked SB about it and I believe they mentioned the Advantage plan will still be available but they're not advertising it. I would call Sharebuilder and ask them...

  2. MDP,

Nice moves inching in. I do like your watch list as well - AT&T, IBM and CVX are on my radar at the moment (AT&T getting smacked today). Great yield and boost to the div income, I see you are finishing the year off nice and steady.

    1. DD,

I was watching T earlier and almost made a block purchase. I will probably wait a bit and see if it dips into the $33 range. It is already my second largest position so I am in no real hurry to add to it.

  3. Good picks, MDP! It seems wise to wait a bit on energy and see where prices settle, I'm going through a similar debate myself. For the sake of cheap gas and investing, I hope it's not a quick pop up to normal in the sector. On your radar, I'm currently looking at IBM and GE. I'm also on the lookout for a Canadian bank or REIT to finish off my 2014 IRA contributions. Keep up the great work over here!

    Best Wishes,
    Ryan

    1. Ryan,

I have added a bit to IBM in the last two months and will probably keep nibbling in the $160 price range. I too have been trying to pick up shares of TD and add to my HCP position. The prices keep drifting away from me.

    1. G,

I agree with you about it being hard to be patient. I wish I had been a bit more patient with some of my buys as well. Unfortunately I don't have any crystal balls on me so I will just keep averaging into my energy positions.

  7. I love your weekly buys! BBL is the hot stock among our community now, rightfully so. If I had some more capital at the moment, I would buy again at the current price. I added to my position in BP this week, so I don't plan on making another larger buy for a week or two. Keep up the good work you are doing over there MDP!

    1. SAD,

I have noticed a lot of BBL purchases as well. I have been buying BP throughout the year (mainly at higher prices) and it continues to look like a good value. There have also been some rumors of a Shell BP merger recently. These are exciting times to say the least!

  8. Seems like everyone's been adding to BBL recently! If I had more capital available, I'd probably be doing the same thing.

Does it still feel weird not doing your $100/week challenge?

    1. Seraph,

It feels weird and great at the same time. I will probably make a few block purchases after a few month, but for now I will try to lay a bit low.

    1. Tawcan,

BBL is certainly popular right now. I just noticed it fell into the $46 range in premarket trading this morning. There will probably be a few more purchases this week from fellow investors.

    1. DGJ,

Congrats on starting a position in BBL. It appears to still be drifting down so hopefully you can pick up some more shares at lower prices. The yield is really looking good!

  11. I'm getting close to initiating a position in BBL. Waiting a bit more. If I miss the boat I am fine because there will always be something else coming up.

Absolutely right! I have missed several boats this year and luckily the harbor is full of them.

  12. Well you definitely picked up some nice yield. I will say that's one thing almost every energy name has going for it these days. BBL also has been very popular. I recently added BBL to my watchlist along with other energy names. Haven't pulled the trigger yet on any but those yields are really tempting me. Thanks for sharing.

    1. DivHut,

The yields are certainly tempting. Maybe too much as I am underwater in several of my energy holdings. But I don't worry since I am still below 12% in the sector and these companies tend to bounce around quite a bit. I'll be happy collecting and reinvesting the dividends in the mean time.
