Weekly Sharebuilder Purchases

Here are my automatic investments for this week.

  • PG:  3.74 shares @ $80.04 --- Yield  3.31%
  • XOM:  3.34 shares @ $89.76 --- Yield  3.25%
  • KO:  7.33 shares @ $40.95  --- Yield  3.22%
  • JNJ:  3.01 shares @ $99.51 --- Yield  3.01%

Total capital invested is $1200 ($300 in each company). The combined yield on this week's purchases is 3.20% and will add $38.37 to my yearly dividends.

I felt like adding to few timeless companies that should pay me dividends for decades to come. It's not too often that you can catch all four of these companies yielding over 3% at the same time. Really I could spend the next several year making these same purchases over and over and would end up doing very well. Unfortunately, that is far too logical and boring for me.

Oil continues to rebound so I will probably just add a few shares here and there for now. REITs and utilities are currently feeling no love so I will likely add to positions in HCP, WPC, and SO as they continue to drop. I just noticed HCP dipped below $40 this morning. I love investing in sectors that are getting clobbered. Short term pain for long term gain!

Stocks on my radar for next week include WMT, T, PG, SO, HCP, WPC, JNJ, and PM.

    1. Hustler,

I can't let you pull too far ahead of me. :-) I would like to say that I will stick with boring companies, but I would probably be lying. At least I can enjoy a week of relatively calm investing. I have been eyeing the REITs closely. They are getting hit pretty hard right now.

    1. DivSon,

After battling with the energy companies all winter, it is nice to find some boring companies to invest in. Most likely I will start storm chasing again.

  3. Strong moves. I added some KO this week as well and am rounding out my Loyal3 position with UL. I agree, when an industry gets clobbered, its our turn to swoop in and pick up some of the pieces. Enjoy the new income.

    1. DG,

It looks like you picked up two really good companies. Right now it looks like REITs and utilities are taking the brunt of the selling. I will be focusing on these two sectors.

  4. MDP,

What kind of commissions do you pay at Sharebuilder for your weekly purchases? I see that their published rate is $6.95/trade.

That would be pretty pricey if you are actually paying that for every new investment you make.

Just as a frame of reference I pay a penny per share with a dollar minimum. So if I buy anything less than 100 shares than it cost a dollar.

Let me know and I would be more than happy to help you get better rates, if you are indeed paying the published rates. I always tell people that rates are negotiable.

I also pay $0.75/contract for options with no minimums.

    Cheers!

    1. GYFG,

The Sharebuilder program I am enrolled in allows me to make 12 purchases a month for $12. The only requirements are I have to make my stock selections by Monday and the purchases go through each Tuesday. I really like the program and it also has a DRIP program as well. If I decide to make more than 12 purchases it is only $1 for each additional transaction. Again, the transactions always go through on Tuesdays.

I do occasionally make purchases outside of this program and for those the fee is $6.95 per trade.

Your investment program sounds really good as well!

  5. Dear MDP,

This is Dividend Samurai from Japan. Nice to meet you over the internet. I think that buying JNJ stocks under $100 is a great move. I may add JNJ to my portfolio as long as it is under $100. I am interested both in HCP and SO as well.

    1. DS,

The three stocks you mentioned are looking really good right now. I won't get too heavy in REITs, but I would love to add more JNJ throughout the year.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Ferdi,

These four would make for a good retirement portfolio by themselves!

Loving the build up position in all of the above. Looking forward to JNJ build up for myself... as I'm sure you can tell.

    1. Lanny,

I have noticed you loading up on JNJ recently. I sometimes think that I have let the number of positions I own get too large. I am going to try and focus on adding to core positions throughout this year. I need to pick 10 or so names and build those up for the remainder of the year.

  8. Going strong with a lot of consumer stocks this time. Nice. I have to say that the yields for those stocks are all pretty high though valuations are not that attractive to me for KO and PG at least. Thanks for sharing.

    1. DivHut,

KO and PG are rarely cheap, but they have not moved much in the past couple of years. I will gladly add more to all of these and hopefully at better prices. :-)
