Stock Puchase: Shell

Today I added to my Shell position.

  • RDS-b:  25 shares @ 59.53 --- Yield  6.32%

Total capital invested is $1495.20. This will increase my yearly dividends by $94.00.

Every time I think I am done with energy purchases, like a giant magnet the sector pulls me back. Maybe I should say like a giant whirlpool. Yikes!!!

Oh well...the music plays on so I will keep dancing!

  1. MDP,
Nice buy! Energy is still a great play, that will not change for a long time.

    1. DG,

I agree with you that we have plenty of time to pick up energy names. In fact if I had waited an extra hour I could have bought shares of Shell for around $59.00. :-)

  2. MDP,

You are continuing to be in beast mode on the acquisition front and a company at quite a juicy yield. We will probably just stick with COP and XOM despite the 6+% yield with Shell. In fact, we are looking at oils for our next purchase now that prices are back to March levels despite the uptick in oil prices since then. Thanks for sharing and watch out for the undertow in that whirlpool. ;)

    All the best.

    1. FD,

I was planning to stick with buying XOM on a weekly basis, but the pullback in Shell has been fairly large. It may be a value trap and the really high yield is a bit alarming as well. I will most likely add to XOM tomorrow. In any event, I really need to add to positions in non energy sectors to better diversify. Hopefully I will force myself to do that for the rest of the year. We'll see.

  3. I made the same purchase today :-) I added 51 of the ordinary shares of RDSB, hard to pass such a great yield from one of world's largest corporations.

    1. DAC,

Congrats on your purchase! BP and Shell both look inviting at the current levels. Hopefully the Shell dividend remains at its current level. If not, I still like the long term prospects.

  4. I've been doing my best to stay away from adding in the energy sector but I keep getting tempted by it because of the valuations. Im looking to add more XOM soon because its a best of breed and the starting yield is very attractive here.

    1. PIP,

XOM is definitely the best of the super majors. Strangely enough I have larger positions in Shell, BP, and Chevron. They will level out in time. I really need to add more consumer staples to the mix.

  5. MDP,

Cool job adding another $100 in forward income. The dividends will come back for the oil companies, so I'm not too worried about them. They've all taken a beating and you've added to your position here. Looking forward to the next move, talk soon.

    1. Lanny,

I am not too worried as well. I am a bit heavy heavy in both allocation and dividend income right now. I know in time things will balance out, but I will continue to monitor things. The good news is that other sectors including utilities, REITs, railroads, and consumer staples are becoming more attractive.
