Recent Buys --- UNP & AXP

Here are my final purchases for this week.

  • UNP:  22 shares @ $68.92 --- Yield  3.20%
  • AXP:  28 shares @ $54.82 --- Yield  2.12%

Total capital invested is $3065.10. The combined yield on these purchases is 2.64% and will add $80.88 to my yearly dividends.

This should conclude my purchases for this week and maybe even this month. AXP is taking a beating today and I have been interested in picking up shares for a while. I will just nibble here and add more if it drifts down into the $40s.

UNP, like all the railroads, is still under heavy selling pressure and this marks my second purchase this month. Choo Choo!!!

  1. Two great buys. I was travelling for work this week and didnt have time to monitor the market. Had i been home, I would have certainly bought some UNP today. I was interested in AXP when it was in the 70's. Glad i held off. I think V and MC are over priced and at these levels, AXP seems ripe for the taking. Even with the rally, there are still good stock that remain in the dog house.

    1. ADY,

No worries about missing out buying this week. I have a feeling we will have many opportunities to pick up companies outside the energy space throughout this year. I will probably add a tobacco and a telecom from here and then just build my current holdings up.

  3. Real heavy buying this month. Why not take advantage of the severe declines in many stocks. Kudos for jumping on board the dividend train in earnest. As ADY above said, "there are still good stock that remain in the dog house." I couldn't agree more. Lots of great prices and yield to be found.

    1. DivHut,

January is the month of the bargain, that is for sure! I still have a long way to go, but I will get there in time. I plan to add maybe PM, MO, T, and VZ and then just build the current positions. Hopefully the prices stay depressed for a while.

  4. Great buys...way to grab yet two more value buys in this extended winter sale offered by the stock market. :) Another $80 added to that already amazing dividend pipeline of yours! Keep it up my friend.

Best wishes and continued success on your personal finance journey! AFFJ

    1. AFFJ,

The market sales comes at the perfect time for me. I have a ton of cash and would like to buy back into the market at lower rates (market timing, I guess). If we have depressed prices for another year of two (not deep recession shit as that could affect jobs) I would be thrilled to death.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Nice buys. I've also been picking up some UNP. I'll have to take a look at AXP, V is the only credit card company I currently own. Thanks for posting your purchases.

    1. AAI,

V & MA seem to get all the love and AXP has been in the dog house for a while now. They have a great brand and strong businesses. I think they will right the ship and I am happy to initiate a position at these levels.

  6. MDP,

I really like both of those stocks. Not the higher yield plays you've had before, but you are getting two quality stocks at great valuations as they are punished for what will be short term bumps in the road.

    Enjoy that income!
    - Gremlin
    - Long UNP and DFS (but not AXP).

    1. DG,

Thanks! I am planning on staying with 3-3.5% for the most part with higher yield purchases coming from traditional players like CAT, MO, T, HCP, SO, and bulletproof oil majors (XOM, CVX, and Shell).
