March 2015 Passive Income

March really seemed to fly by this year. The market has been bouncing around all over the place and my portfolio has been equally choppy with oil falling, then climbing, then falling. Companies like BBL, BP, and PM are behaving like biotechs with massive moves within a short period of time. Then you look at Kraft, a supposedly boring food company, and it is up 40% for the month.

At the end of the day, the unpredictable swings within my portfolio don't matter much to me. What matters most is these companies are working damn hard to provide passive income that will one day support my wife and I for many years to come.

This was a really good month for dividends especially since I surpassed $2000 for just the second time ever. I wasn't sure I would hit 2K again as my junk bond payment is received on the last day of the month and it pushed me just passed the threshold. In December I surpassed 2k as well, but I needed a special dividend from one of my mutual funds and a massive payment from ESV to hit that number. Well ESV has since cut its dividend by 80% and there was no special dividend. So overall I am really pleased with the month.

A lot of credit this month goes to companies like BBL, BP, and RDS-b. I have been investing heavily in these companies for many months and the results are finally showing up on this month's ledger.

I also started ramping up my purchases in March once I noticed that my tax bill will be quite a bit lower than anticipated. I bought a ton of PM and CAT and can't wait to see the effects of these purchases during the next couple of months.

April is off to a good start as well. I have already received over $100 in dividends from Coke and Baxter and made a sizable investment in JNJ.

Anyway, here is the passive income that I received for March.

Taxable Account
  • CAIBX --- $559.06
  • AHITX --- $273.03
  • BBL --- $193.33
  • BP --- $162.48
  • RDS-b --- $85.41
  • DLR --- $85.00
  • TGT --- $75.40
  • CVX --- $73.44
  • MAT --- $62.70
  • DVY --- $59.81
  • PFE --- $52.22
  • MCD --- $51.10
  • MSFT --- $46.50
  • GM --- $43.50
  • IBM --- $41.00
  • ESV --- $39.54
  • XOM --- $32.64
  • AFL --- $26.13
  • CAG --- $15.75
  • NOV --- $15.18
  • PEP --- $14.64
  • WM --- $9.78
  • JNJ --- $7.31
Total monthly passive income for March is $2024.95

New Capital Invested
  • PM --- $7750.28
  • CAT --- $4322.50
  • RDS-b --- $2110.30
  • XOM --- $750
  • NOV --- $750
  • CVX --- $500
  • CAIBX --- (5997.00)
Total capital invested is $10,186.08.

Thanks for stopping by. I wasn't sure how it would turn out with the turmoil in energy companies, but it worked out pretty well this time.

    1. Anonymous,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. My thoughts on MAT are I wish I hadn't bought it at $30. It has been and contines to be a value trap. I may sell my share and take a short term loss or possibly sell some my KRFT shares along with it and wash out of the two out. For now I will hold tight.

  7. Nice work!

You are putting up some very nice dividend numbers.

Question: Do you reinvest all of your dividends back into the pipeline? Meaning is the $10K net of the dividends or was it $8K of new capital invested and $2K of dividends reinvested?

    Cheers!

    1. GYFG,

Good question about the capital. I would say this month I the 10k is composed of $9500 from my paycheck, $500 from non-DRIP dividends and then I DRIPPED about $1500. So in all reality I actually bought about $11,500 worth of stock.

Also I have some companies that I DRIP in Sharebuilder and don't DRIP in my other brokerage account. This actually makes things a bit more confusing. For instance I have 40 shares of CVX that I don't reinvest the dividends and the rest of my shares are in Sharebuilder where I do DRIP the dividends. I own several companies that are held in both DRIP and non DRIP accounts. It's actually a bit of a cluster f@#k.

The more I type the more confused I am getting so I will stop here.

    1. Captain,

I could come close to retiring as well if only I could receive this much every month. Actually I would still be cutting it close even with some drastic expense elimination. We all need to keep forging ahead!

  10. MDP,

Like Captain, I'd be retired with that kind of passive income!

Awesome work. I couldn't even imagine being able to invest $10k in one month. That's another level.

You're off to a crazy start this year. Looking forward to seeing how it all plays out for you.

    Best regards!

Last month was a bit crazy with big purchases in PM and CAT. I wish I had $2,000 every month, but that unfortunately is still several years away. I'll keep plugging away though!

  14. MDP,

Or should I say MVP? DAMN! This is awesome - crossing $2K with a few adverse events with your dividend payer and the competition from special dividends and what not from December. Guess what? You still crossed $2K for the month - with that kind of dividend income, I surely would be taking a bigger look at the picture of life, it's incredible.

Great job MDP, keep slashing away over there, that JNJ purchase this month was monsterous as well.

    1. Lanny,

Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate it. The bigger picture is coming more into focus each day. I am constantly thinking of how I could make it without working another day. I probably could side hustle it, work a 3 month a year job, or develop a monk type lifestyle, but I will forge ahead for a while longer. I do like having a lot more options now than I did just a few years ago.

  15. So impressive! It must be wild watching the up and down swings with a portfolio your size, I'd find that so fun. Glad to hear taxes aren't going to kill you as bad as you thought and I'm excited to see what you do with those excess funds. Have a good weekend, MDP!

    1. Ryan,

Yeah there is somewhat better tax picture than originally thought. I still owe a tad over $6k but I was thinking $12k without looking to closely at everything. As far as the portfolio goes, I sometimes feel a bit sea sick especially with the energy holdings. It's all good though and I will continue add to the pipeline until FI.

  16. That's a really solid month MDP. I like the broad sector diversity that you have. You must be at pace to top $20k this year!. If I didn't have any kids, I'd convince my wife to take our dividends, get our rental paid off and just roam the world with that sort of passive income!. Congratulations, and keep it up!

    1. Integrator,

Thanks for the comment! If I count my retirement accounts I think $20 is easily in the bag. Taxable accounts will probably be closer to $16.5k and hopefully $18k in forward dividends by year end. Some day I hope to roam around the world, but this year I hope to roam around the US more than I have in the past.

  17. Great job on the dividends! That beats my dividends by a little, although my rental income smokes it...

  18. $10K in new capital and over $2000 in dividends is a great month. My dividends for the month received a nice bump as well primarily due to BBL's semi-annual dividend, though the overall numbers are nothing close to yours.
