April 2015 Recap

Another month is in the books and my dividend snowball continues to grow. At one point in time I dreamed of reaching $1000 worth of dividends in a quarter. Now I am looking forward to the day where I receive at least $1000 in every month.

I also continued dismantling my mutual fund holdings, added to several of my positions, and even added a few new soldiers to my dividend army. This month also marks the first time I received dividends from TD which I purchased back in January.

Thanks to some heavy investing and a lot of dividend increases I reached a new milestone of $16,000 in forward passive income. Looking back over the last 4 years of  tireless saving and investing is amazing. There has been no shortage of triumphs and pitfalls along the way. One constant theme throughout the march up the mountain has been relentless forward progress. I love every second of the journey!

Here is the summary of my passive income for April 2015.

Dividends/interest
  • AHITX:  $259.21
  • PM:  $208.54
  • GE:  $99.46
  • MO:  $78.00
  • KO:  $67.87
  • CSCO:  $50.40
  • TD: 46.31
  • KRFT:  $41.25
  • BAX:  $34.00

Total passive income received during the month of April is $885.04

Other non employment income received: GE Option Premium $181.10

So even if I didn't spend one second at work last month I would have made $1066.14.

New Capital Invested

  • JNJ --- $5714.40
  • HCP --- $5014.55
  • SO --- $2739.50
  • WMT --- $2485.95
  • TIS --- $2336.95
  • PG --- $2293.70
  • WPC --- $1276.55
  • RDS-b --- $250.00
  • BBL --- $250
  • CAT --- $200
  • XOM --- $200
  • CAIBX --- ($3000.00)
  • AHITX --- ($3000.00)

Total new capital invested in April is $16761.60.

Damn, I'm still amazed at the speed with which you build your portfolio and dividend income. Awesome job! Keep it up and that $1,000 threshold every month will be broken before you know it.

    1. BGH,

I had some money sitting in the bank so I went ahead and deployed pretty much everything. I really need to build up my cash balances. I keep saying that I will and then don't. We'll see what happens in May.

I still haven't sold MAT and I probably should have on Monday when it hit $30. Now I will probably hold off for a while longer. Hopefully it doesn't plummet back down to $22. :-)

wow! You're invested nearly $23k in new stocks! This is the way to go. Hopefully, one day, I'm also able to pump in $15k a month in fresh capital. Very nice achievement! You never fail to motivate me :)

Like the dividend snowball, our careers follow the same philosophy. Plant...cultivate....harvest. Keep working hard and good things seem to happen over time. I am glad that I provide some motivation. That really means a lot to me.

      Thanks,

I am thrilled that I am providing some motivation! That wasn't my intention when I started this blog, but it is certainly a nice by-product. Thanks for the comment.

I will keep my eye on the sharks. I tend to swim towards them however. Where is my shark repellent when I need it?

Your monthly rates of both receiving dividends and making new investments puts me in awe really. Looking forward to a day where my accounts can move like that.

    1. DG,

It will arrive sooner than you expect. Five years ago when I paid off my house I just wanted to get a couple hundred grand to complement my 401k. Then I started investing for income a year later and thought if I could create $1000 a month to supplement SS when I retired (20 years from then) I would be thrilled. Now I would like to reach FI in around four years.

It's crazy how goals can evolve as we make progress!

Thanks, my friend. It feels really good to be able to invest a lot of money into income producing assets. There have been many years in the past when I had little to invest and there was very little visible progress. I just keep fighting hard and following the process whether I have $10 or $10,000 to invest each month.

Over 1,000... NBD... right? Wow, man, wow, straight making moves. Curious on how you're feeling with the option plays and if you like it at all. I see how it'll add more bang to your income in the month - are you ready for the tax impact?

Great job and I bet May is already off to a killer start, pumped for you.

$1,000 feels soooooooooo good! The options are cool and I probably will just dabble a bit hear an there. I'm sure the first time I have shares called away, I will be pissed. Right now I have call on GM at $40, VZ at $50 and BP at $47. You can add a $1-$2 in premiums on these as well so they actually will have to trade at the exercise price plus the premiums to put me jeapardy of losing the shares. Right now VZ is the only company that is close.

Interesting. Also, I've been liking how you make your purchases of stock, by the way, I know I've told you before. I think, off topic, I'll be picking up more JNJ over the next few weeks, but how do you feel about T rowe price? Curious on your take, thanks MDP!

    3. Lanny,

I plan on picking up some more JNJ as well. I really don't like banks/finance services companies too much. I did buy TD at the beginning of the year and own Aflac however. TROW from what I've read seems pretty solid but I probably will focus on other areas.

  14. wow, your new addition of fresh cash to your dividend army is mind blowing. Did I read it correctly? Over a 16k? I wish I could do such saving. If you keep up such additions and adding to great companies, you will have that 1k monthly in a no time and even more I think you would be done accumulating fairly quick. Great job!

It has been a long grinding journey but certainly fulfilling. I have reached FI yet, but the FI ship is getting closer to shore each month. Hopefully with a year or so I can conceivably cover my expenses with dividends and maybe a seasonal type job. I plan on reaching total FI sometime in the next four years or so. A lot of things can happen during that time span. I will be a fun journey regardless of the final FI date.

  17. Hi MDP,

I love the photo and the caption!

Congratulations on the continued progress. You are well and truly smashing it. I'm not kidding, but I was chuffed that I invested with £1,685 in April. It's a bit mind boggling to me that you're able to put away 10 times that amount.

I'm now averaging £100 per month, which was a benchmark for me. My next one is £250. Like yourself, I just love this journey!

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I love the photo and its message as well. It is mind boggling to me as well. Like the dividend snowball we are creating, I have been building my career snowball for two decades. I took a looooooong time before I got tot this level. How long will it last? I don't know, but what I do know is I am going to ride this wave for as long as I can!

Keep fighting over there. You are doing great!

Another stellar month. I couldn't even imagine being able to invest over $16,000 in one month. I'd consider being able to invest that much in a year as pretty solid. Ha!

Keep it up. You're getting so much closer every single month at this pace. Excited to see how this plays out for you.

    Cheers!

    1. DM,

The island of freedom is certainly getting closer each and every month! The $16,000 is a little misleading as I had some money sitting idle in my checking account that I decided to put to work.

I really don't know how everything will play out. I do expect successes and some failures along the way. I welcome both as they will provide valuable experience which I can learn and grow from.

April was an extraordinary month for investments. I ended using some of my cash surplus to take advantage of the REIT pull back. I will most likely curtail things a bit this month.
