Stock Purchase Take 2: VZ

After picking up shares of CVX earlier, I decided to add to my VZ position.

  • VZ:  21 shares @ $48.10 --- Yield  4.57%

Total capital invested is $1017.05 and will add $46.20 to my yearly dividends.

For some reason T and VZ have decoupled recently so I went with VZ. Currently my T position is about 2 1/2 times my VZ position.

Adding heavy hitters like Shell, Chevron, and VZ this week should help me inch closer to $17,000 in forward dividends/interest.....or perhaps back to $15,000. :-)

No risk no reward and I hate fucking safety nets.

  1. MDP,

Great job this week with all of the high yield purchases and we concur with the attitude toward safety nets. We looked at some bond funds for shock absorbers but decided against it. We have a long way to FI so we can either be afraid of a little volatility or try to take advantage of it by adding to our favorite names when the market doesn't favor them. We truly believe this is a bit of an overreaction around the world at the moment in terms of interest rates as the conundrum on rates in the U.S. still remains. We will see but for now let's all just keep adding to big cap names with long dividend histories paying more than 2X yields than the 10 year.

    All the best.

    1. FD,

Yes the big caps (800 lb gorillas) are my focus! Keep up the great progress you are making and buy during all market conditions.

  2. I think the oil majors are priced really attractively here. Since I've got quite a bit of exposure to big oil I wont be making too many purchases but theres most likely room for another buy or two. My plan is to add some more XOM shares first before any further investment into oil but thats due to my current portfolio makeup. Ive also turned on the automatic reinvestment for my big oil companies to increase the positions a bit more. Thanjs fir the update.

    1. Well I got distracted about the CVX purchase. VZ is good here too. Like the quasi utilities od T and VZ and as we bring even more devices onto their networks and people crave more data they will continue to have plenty of customers.

    2. PIP,

I like your strategy with XOM and I plan to add more as well throughout the month. It takes a strong stomach to keep adding as these companies have been falling for almost a year now. In time it will all pay off. There may be more bumps and bruises ahead, however.

  3. MDP, I like your constant investments. I added some XOM today and scanned for other opportunities. I would like to add VZ if it drops a little more especially with the high yield.

    1. Div Son,

VZ is acting strange right now with T surging and VZ starting to falter. I own both so I actually like the idea of picking up VZ on weakness to bring the position up closer to T's weight. XOM is my smallest position within the majors and I need to correct that over time. Shell and BP are great for dividends, but cuts certainly have happened with these two and may happen again.

  4. Both CVX and VZ are solid purchases. Love your weekly purchases. Slow and steady wins the game.

    1. Tawcan,

You said it. This path can be lonely and seemingly fruitless at times, but I feel confident the journey will lead to great things ahead.

  5. Whoah! 2 purchases!? Nice. CVX and VZ will surely give you what you want over time: growing dividend income! I didn't realize CVX has fallen to a 4%+ yield lately! I thought I missed it last time around.

    1. BGH,

Yeah I left my weekly purchases routine and bought Shell, CVX, and VZ in block purchases this week. CVX seems really solid at 4%. Shell at 6% is a little shaky.

    1. Bryan,

I have noticed before that CVX interests you @ $100. I have plenty of BBL and I am actually becoming a bit worried about it and Shell as they surpass the 6% yield level. I will most likely keep adding to both, but a cut in the future would not surprise me with either company. Hopefully that isn't the case.

  7. Im the opposite. My VZ stake is way more than more T stake. I want T to fall below $34 again to pick up some more. Otherwise, great pick up! Hope it pays off for both of us well into the future!

    1. ADD,

I agree with you about T looking great below $34. In time the two positions will balance.
